A Boy and His Lunch
A Boy and His Lunch
Sometimes when I look beyond my own comfortable little world I feel too overwhelmed to wonder. I feel too overwhelmed to teach my children to wonder. Fortunately, they sometimes teach me. Read more »

A Child’s Ears
A CHILD’S EARS
Joshua’s ears are different than mine; I’m convinced of it. They don’t look any different, but there is a difference nonetheless. Read more »

Adventure and Celebration I
ADVENTURE AND CELEBRATION
“I want to live life on my tiptoes!” I wrote in my journal about ten years ago. It sounded good. Have you ever tried walking on tiptoes for even a day, let alone a lifetime? Read more »

A Shorter Catechism
A Shorter Catechism
I used to think that the Shorter Catechism referred to a briefer version of reformation theology. I know differently now. NOW I know that the Shorter Catechism really is what Very Short People think about God. Read more »

A Tale of Two Houses
A Tale of Two houses
or It’s all My Fault
Sometimes I don’t know what I think until it pops out of my mouth. This provides a great deal of amusement for my family and others who love me. Some days I wish there was an easier way to access the things inside my head and my heart than just waiting, along with everyone else, to hear what I say.

Dino in the Dunny

There’s a Tyrranosaurus Rex in my toilet. It’s neon green and has sharp plastic teeth. I don’t know how it got there or what it’s doing. It hasn’t bitten anyone yet, but you never can be too sure about dinosaurs.
I really want to write an essay chock full of cute, whimsical things that my children have been saying or doing. Mostly I’d like to write about all the darling, precious experiences that Josh and Nate had at Disneyland yesterday.

Footprints of a Child
“Mommy, Mommy! Look! I got a booger out of my nose.”
“That’s rude, Josh, please use a Kleenex next time.”I replied automatically.
“But Mom, what should I do with it?”
“Josh,”I answered wearily, “That’s why we use Kleenex.” I still had not answered his question.
“There.” I felt a sticky hand tangle itself in my long hair. “It was just a little booger so I wiped it in your hair.” Read more »

About
“As the old saying goes, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words,’” intoned my 11th grade English teacher about a hundred years ago. Then he cocked a bushy eyebrow at us and continued, “But did you know that the right word is easily worth a thousand pictures?”
I haven’t thought about words in quite the same way since.
